Printed by the United States Treasury, Bureau of Engraving and printing, from the actual dies and plates, this rare collection of intaglio bank notes (printed on one side only, not legal tender) includes the following:
The front of an 1878 $500 Silver Certificate, bearing the portrait of Charles Sumner, a fiery abolitionist and United States senator from Massachusetts in the mid – 19th century. This note carries the signatures of Scofield and Gilfillan.
The back of a 1918 $500 Federal Reserve Note, which is the second series of large-size issues. The 1914 Series was issued in denominations from $5 to $100, and the 1918 denominations from $500 to $10,000.
The front of an 1882 $500 Gold Certificate, which is produced from the original master die, and is representative of the colorful and intricate designs used on these certificates.
